| 82 12/13/2001 Sharon's Real Intentions: To Kill Arafat Sam Hamod |
| By now it must be clear, even to someone who is as unwilling to see as President Bush, that Ariel Sharon's real intention is to kill Yasir Arafat, not simply to push him from power. The attacks on Arafat's offices, home and compound make amply clear this has been his intention; now, Sharon's statement that "Arafat is irrelevant" is just the latest in the proofs that Sharon wants to be rid of Arafat. Sharon is trying to marginalize Arafat so that his death will not be seen as that of an international leader, but as the death of a man who no longer counted on the world's stage. I'm sure in Sharon's mind he feels that if Arafat is elminated, he can destroy the Palestinian movement or create a puppet government in Palestine, in the same way that Hitler set up the Vichy French during World War II. But, Sharon is as wrong as was Hitler; the Vichy didn't work, nor will an Israeli "caretaker" or a Palestinian puppet government work. It didn't work with the Israeli puppet "South Lebanese Army" in Lebanon; it won't work in Palestine, with or without Arafat in power or alive. The Palestinian movement is much larger than Arafat and has many miilions of supporters throughout the world, with a lot of cash; if Sharon kills Arafat, he will find out what real terrorism is because the radicals, who are perhaps more cunning than Hamas, will then be able to argue that anything goes when fighting Sharon and his minions. This, of course, will not bode well for America either because we are seen as the power behind Israel and as Israel's chief weapons supplier. This latest behvior fits with Sharon's anger at having failed to kill Arafat in the 80s when Sharon destroyed Lebanon in his desire to kill Arafat and the PLO. Sharon has had a fear that if the Palestinians achieve statehood they could be a threat to Israel. This is obviously ridiculous because Israel has atomic and powerful conventional weapons, compliments of America; Palestinians don't even have Stinger missiles to hit Israeli American-made weapons such as helicopters or planes, no serious anti-tank weapons and certainly don't have atomic weapons. If America hopes to have any allies, aside from those they employ, in the Arab or Muslim world, then Bush must step in and stop this violence by pulling Sharon back from his continuing illegal settlements, must stop Sharon from bombing and attacking Arafat and his police, must stop Sharon from assassinating Palestinian leaders--only then will the Palestinian "suicide bombers" stop their attacks. At todaysalternativenews, we also condemn Hamas for killing innocent people. Unfortunately, Sharon and Hamas are of the same cloth, both kill innocent people without regard--both Sharon and Hamas do this to terrorize their opponents; both are absolutely wrong and are seen as terrorists in our eyes and in God's eyes. As has been said by spokespersons for the Women in Black of Israel, by the late P.M. Rabin and Hanan Ashrawi, killing only begets killing, it will never lead to peace. During this month, when all three of the great religions, Islam, Judaism and Christianity have holidays celebrating their blessings, it is time for President Bush to show his true leadership, to stand up like a true Christian and for the other leaders in the Jewish and Muslim world to all say to the terrorists, STOP THIS CAN NO LONGER GO ON, KILLING LEADS ONLY TO MORE KILLING. Only then will we have a chance for PEACE ON THE EARTH AND GOODWILL TO ALL MEN. If not, then the devil will continue to rule in the Middle East and all of us in the world will pay the price. |
