Neruda Said and Wave Catcher (2 poems)
Kristen D. Scott
Neruda Said

Neruda said, “Please don’t leave me even for a day”−
I say not for a minute or I would wane

wrap me in the warmth of your wings like
a butterfly clinging to the yellow iris
the winter robin covering bespeckled
eggs –

don’t leave me not even for a minute
grab my hand and hold me
as sweet as
the nightingale’s song - the rush
of water and moon against
the ebbing sun –

take my breath into yours
huddle me into your side
whispering softly as
grass−

do not leave me
even for
a minute
in this life
if you should
I would

Wave Catcher

sailing toward Cleopatra Island
off Turkey's Aegean,
October’s sun hot as our bodies,
time collapsing into
sea

plunging like an idol
you move your waves
Neptune −
commanding moments
movements
that perfect stroke,
tine scepter

fixing your gaze
a smile passes
from fingertips
all the way into the blue pool
of my eyes
I am,

Undone
