PUMPING OIL (poem)
SAM HAMOD
PUMPING OIL

Every night, on TV they play

The same tapes, plume after

Plume of oil, gushing out of the sea bottom,

Never ending, a volcano of oil, dark brown

Against the light green sea, and

The commentators so solemn, each night

The left and the right, intoning their

Wisdom of repetition, TV, TV, a repetition of words

As repetitive as the videos we see, as

Repetitive as the oil that does not stop

Erupting, repeating the same stories, as

If nothing else

Is going on

In the world, except this oil,

nothing of the peace/medicine flotilla

attacked by Israel, killing so many, nothing

of Haiti now, or the starvation in the Sahal,

These spewing plumes, like feathers now

In the hats of Obama, BP, right wing,

Left wing, CNN, Fox, MSNBC, ABC, CBS

Every day, every night

But nothing of those who died

On the oil platform, or the woman

Who radioed and shouted, “mayday, mayday,”

And her boss who yelled for her to shut up, no

Word about why it took Obama so long to

Realize this was the biggest oil spill in history,

No one has asked why he didn’t call on other nations

Ask as he did to kill people in Afghanistan and Iraq, why

He couldn’t ask them to help clean this mess up, a mess

The birds, turtles, fish, shrimp, crayfish, didn’t cause, but as they die, slowly, oil scum...

I guess Obama was to busy, going on vacation, thinking about

His next speech, his next lie about peace in the Middle East,

Wondering how to help Netanyahu lie some more about

Why he had to kill people who came for peace with medicines

For Gaza, perhaps Obama was too concerned about how to say

He “regretted the loss of life,” while dodging the truth, just as he

Did with the BP oil spill, saying after a month, “we’re in charge,” a

Little like Alex Haig when he buffooned himself with those words,

Obama did no better, buffooning himself in front of the cameras,

While everyone was astounded that he’d been “in charge,” but

Of course, when it was clear, all was lost, and the “cap” would not work,

Obama said, “No, it was BP’s fault, and he sent Holder to

Prosecute BP, to gather evidence…” so, he wasn’t in charge

After all, just like the oil pumping, out of the sea,

Day after day, minute after minute, night after night,

Pumping, pumping, pumping, pumping

And the final truth is, no one is in charge
